| POST AND BEAM CONSTRUCTION Post and beam construction refers to the craft of using traditional timber frame joinery with round logs to create a structural frame and later filling the frame using conventional framing and finishes. Unlike timber frame construction the frame is visible from the exterior as well the inside of the home. With this type of construction you still have the warmth and beauty of natural logs complemented by the finishes of conventional construction.
DESIGN AND DETAIL
The most important part of the post and beam process is joinery design and planning. Each element with-in the structural frame needs to be detailed and sized to suit its structural and architectural requirement. As well, joinery types must be selected; mortise and tenon, dovetail, etc... Both visible and hidden joint details that showcase the craftsmanship of our builders is what makes this product unique. From this detailed design a set of shop drawings are produced, showing every cut and joinery type for every piece within the structure.
CONSTRUCTION After the detailed design is produced the building process begins. Each log is selected to suit its required size and length. The piece is then laid out, ends are squared, round(s) of log are flattened to accommodate framing, joinery work is completed, checked, labelled and dry stacked. Each piece also needs to be slotted so that exterior sheathing and interior finishes can be inserted into the frame.
A typical piece may take from a few hours to several days depending on the complexity of the element. After all the pieces are completed the finished structure is loaded on a transport truck and shipped to its final destination. After arrival at your home site the structure is assembled with a crane and ready for framing and finishing. |
